Brahms
Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77

Elgar
Enigma Variations, Op. 36

Tonight we combine two of the great masterpieces from the late 19th century with the winning composition from the Composers’ Workshop at the University of Oxford. We are joined by Jennifer Pike, 2002 BBC Young Musician of Year to perform Brahms’ virtuosic Violin Concerto with its dancing ‘gypsy’ finale. Endearingly, The Enigma Variations was born out of a parlour game where Edward Elgar played variations on a theme to illustrate the personal characteristics of his friends, while his wife guessed who he had in mind.
